A Brief History of Fort Myers Beach
Thousands of years ago, this former fishing village was home to Calusa Indians, long before it became the bustling Fort Myers Beach we know and love today. They were the first known people living on Estero Island, where Fort Myers Beach is located, and were here as early as 100 BC. They resided on an elevated mound built centuries ago, which is where the Mound House currently resides. We highly recommend visiting to learn more about the cultural and natural history of Fort Myers Beach.

On Estero Island, the Matanzas Pass Preserve contains the last maritime oak hammock community. Hammocks are elevated areas surrounded by wetlands or other vegetation. The change in habitat provides a diverse range of bird, mammal, reptile, and other amphibian species. We highly recommend walking the Matanzas Pass Preserve to get up close and personal with Florida’s unique landscape!
